BULGARIA
Why Bulgaria?
Background
-
Bulgaria is the poorest country in the EU
-
Every month 150 children are abandoned
-
10,000 girls and women are trafficked every year
84% of Bulgaria’s 700,000 Roma people live below the poverty line. Roma people are the most marginalised group in Europe and have little opportunity to break out of poverty. Conditions in Bulgaria’s Roma communities are third world. There is little access to healthcare, education or employment. Every day children are abandoned to orphanages because their parents cannot afford to keep them.
How do we help?
We work with the Trussell Trust and Door of Hope, two organisations who have nationals on the ground working with groups at risk and helping them move out of poverty through eduation and social care. They make sure that people are treated as individuals not numbers and they work to tackle problems at the root.
The Trussell Trust in particular is working to break the cycle of poverty that sees children abandoned and young people forced into crime, prostitution and human trafficking. They do this by working with Bulgarian people, providing them with the tools they need to bring about lasting change. Link Romania helps by helping to provide part of the finance to enable it to happen
